————————————————————————–

Many of the exhibited works are regalia, carved pieces that emphasize the great development of this art in the region –extending to all Cameroon. These regalia are objects exclusively reserved to the king, since it is a symbol of his authority.

It is formed by more than a hundred objects made of different materials –even though wood is going to stand out-, in which traditions, beliefs and social organization are going to be reflected.

The most relevant objects are the leadership beds used in enthronement ceremonies and the ritual thrones present in those events or in the ancestor worship. However, the most noteworthy objects may be the columns of the porticos found in the houses –as the War House- and in the palaces –like the one of the king-, based on an iconography of identification with the king by means of emblems and symbols of authority, such as leopards, bells…

—————————————————————————-

One of the most representative and shocking elements of the art coming from Oku are the masks, which belong, in most cases, to the secret societies that still play an important role within the social hierarchy. Its function is that of maintaining the order and stopping the antisocial behaviors that threaten the general wellbeing or put the traditional customs at risk, always intending to keep harmony and peace in the society. Some examples of secret societies are found in the justice field, funerals, or enthronizations.

Mystery is added to the esthetic beauty of each of the masks since the way of creation must be kept in absolute secret. These maks can punish due to their great magic power –in a medicinal sense-, among other reasons, which gives them power and even life.

The dances and movements performed in ceremonies and traditional rituals are the way to express this power.

The composition of the masks is as follows: craved piece, face cover –in the final representation looks as if the neck of the mask is showing- costume –cotton, feathers, organic elements, skulls…-, ankle bracelets, canes, or lances.

DIOSES Y MÚSICA

IMG_6097

—————————————————————————-

Their gods do not constitute a closed pantheon, and new gods can be created if needed and whenever the seers consider appropriate to do so; for example, if something inexplicable happens. Those gods usually are historical figures that are important in the life of Oku.

Regarding music and musical instruments, they occupy the “powerful medicine” category, since they are objects charged with power that is used by the secret societies to carry out their functions.
