THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THESE CULTURES

It can be said that the knowledge about the cultures that appear in the Renacimiento room is very recent; such was the case that the first remains date from the beginning to the end of the twentieth century. There are two means by which the works are found: casual –for instance, farmers who work their lands- or archeological excavations. Adding to these circumstances that the knowledge in the African continent is developed through oral tradition, the disinformation, and ignorance of the origin, the result is a very difficult contextualization of the production of works, as well as of their social structure.

CULTURES IN THE BASINS OF THE NIGER RIVER

Most of the villages kept in the Renacimiento room are located in the valley of the Niger River. Of course, all of them have different styles and cultures. In this way, the most ancient culture of West Africa is found in Nigeria, the Nok culture, which, according to the last investigations, can be dated from the seventh century BC to the ninth century AD. The villages of Sokoto and Katsina, which belong between the fifth c. BC and the eighth c. AD are their followers –but without so much artifice.

In the twelfth century (European Middle Ages) and also in Nigeria we will be witnesses of the refined “court art” of the Kingdom of Ife and the ancient Kingdom of Benin, with the idealization of the images as a sample of the monarchical exaltation. The importance of the material that has been used to make them cannot be omitted, since most of the works belonging to both cultures are preserved in bronze, not in terracotta.

In Mali, four important cultures are developed between the tenth and the seventeenth century, such as Segou, Bankoni, Tennenkou and, especially, Djenne, due to its iconographic variety and the great expressionism that its images show.

Niger will comprise really interesting cultures like that of Dori and, above all, that of Bura, which will be developed between the third and the seventeenth century AD. They will stand out because of heir funerary rites, in particular, the inhumation one.

Talking about Ghana is taking about the Komaland (thirteenth to seventeenth c.) and the Ashanti (sixteenth c.) cultures. We maintain little figures used as funerary objects belonging to the first culture. Regarding the second one, we preserve their heads, also linked to that kind of rituals.

Getting closer in time, we find the interesting Cham/Longuda culture coming from Nigeria, and which lived between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. With them we learn which type of containers for ritual healing they used in each case. Our Jukun couple will be exceptional because they are the only united couple until nowadays. They are the ancestral parents of the community, and they can be identified as the Adam and Eve of this culture. Other cultures that are also present are the Yoruba, the Igbo, the Tiv, or the Mambila.

In Ghana and Ivory Coast, the Ewe figures, “Mami Wata” and “Papa Densu”, show how the iconography of voodoo gods is made.

Ségou,Bankoni,Tennenkou

提及到加纳,我们可以想到Komaland(十三世纪至十七世纪)和Ashanti(十六世纪)

Cham / Longuda

Mambila ……

VILLAGES FROM THE VALLEY OF THE CONGO RIVER

A courtesan art will be developed in the Valley of the Congo River; it will be characterized by the ornamental richness of these cultures that still exist nowadays in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Luba Kingdom (sixteenth c.) or their neighbors, the Chokwe (sixteenth c.), will repeat their artistic characteristics, connected to the power, just like the Bakongo (fifteenth c.), with a great esthetic expressivity, or the Mangbetu (eighteenth c.), who will produce anthropomorphic ritual jars to fill them up with palm wine. These jars followed their physical physiognomy based on cranial deformity (dolichocephaly).

[tab title=»4.

EAST AFRICA

In the central and eastern area of the African continent, we can find some civilizations with artistic forms that, although they have not had so much transcendence, they have a very interesting esthetic.

In this way, in Ethiopia we will see the Falasha (seventeenth century), known as “black Jews”, whose sculptural forms are related to their religious beliefs.

The Pare culture (nineteenth c.) comes from Tanzania, with a very interesting production of little figures used in initiation ceremonies to pass from childhood –both girls and boys- to adulthood. These figures will stand out due to the peculiarity of its fabric wrapping, through which we can see the form of its body.

LOS JINETES A CABALLO-RIDERS ON HORSEBACK

————————————————————————————————-

The collection of six riders exhibited in the Renacimiento room is exceptional because of its rarity and its great number in relation with those that can be observed in other European collections.

The representation of riders on horseback is outstanding in African art due to the difficult survival of horses in all the Sub-Saharan area, as a result of the lack of water, the malaria and, mainly, the bite of the tsetse fly.

Horses belonged to those who had economic, politic or even military power within the community, being a symbol of majesty and richness.

It seems like these sculptures were modeled to be placed in funerary altars, and, among them, the similarity of the features of the animal and the rider stands out. It reflects the symbiosis between them: similar complexion, same necklaces and scarifications…

Afrikanische Kunst: Die Reiter
