[tab title=»Batiks de Mozambique. Gam Tepeyac.

Gam Tepeyac presents the exhibition Batiks of Mozambique, an exclusive, original, ethnic and eye-catching of these wonderful fabrics that the organization has collected through the years, after all its collaborative venture and humanitarian performance in this African country, based in voluntary work and social awareness, as well as Development Cooperation work.

But first of all… what’s a Batik? We may define this object that comes from the Malayan word “ambatik” (cloth of drops), as a cotton cloth of vibrant colors hand-painted using natural dyes.

Which is its technique? The task of the dyeing is very sophisticated, as this process needs time and dedication, resulting in pieces of great quality. It is based in the use of bee wax, in a 30%, and paraffin, in a 70%, it is applied hot all over the cloth in those places that want to be painted. After the wax has been applied the cloth is dyed and once it is dry the previous steps are repeated, that is to say, the colors to be preserved are covered with wax, as the rest of the fabric will continue to collect the color of the dye applied.

What does it represent? The original Batik paintings represent a form of popular art animated, that expresses, through dazzling colors, Mozambican everyday scenes, where dances, music, but also work tasks, such as smashing grain, drawing water from wells, making or transporting food or even a scene in a school are introduced. Therefore, human figures are essential, they are black slim elongated silhouettes, faceless but full of dynamism as the objects used in their everyday life and in the typical traditional architecture of the country, made out of wood, bamboo and cone-shaped roofing of straw that protect from inclement weather. We have to keep in mind the animals that live together with this community, among them, we find giraffes and zebras.

There is plenty of dynamism in all the scenes with a color range focused on warm colors such as orange, red, but without forgetting cooler tones such as blue or green.

Although there is no perspective and there are no backgrounds where to focus attention on the represented action, fine lines that add a greater aesthetic sense are included.

From 10th of July to 9th of September of 2018

Schedule: From Tuesday to Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm and from 4:30 pm to 8 pm

Sunday: from 11am to 2pm

Aber…was iste in Batik?

Was ist abgebildet?

Gam Tepeyac

[tab title=»Fetiches africanos.

In this section you will find those exhibitions that reveal the collection not shown in our museum, and which are on display with a determined durability. With them, you will be able to enjoy unique moments, increasing your knowledge and curiosity about African art.The two figures exhibited in the cabinets “Glimpses over Africa” are African fetishes. In the African context, the concept fetish was designated first by the Portuguese and refers to those objects or sculptures that have a utility related to magic, superstition, and religious beliefs.

The objects themselves have not attributed the value, but are the sorcerers or priests who exercise their power through them. The fetish is the material support through which the energy is poured through rites and substances.

In general, fetishes are anthropomorphic (human) and sometimes zoomorphic (animal). To wield this symbolic magic, the fetishes are formed by plant, mineral or animal substances (horns, fur, leaves, tree barks, seashells…) that are attributed magical or supernatural powers. Within fetishes, we can find elements that contain this power.

The function of the fetishes is to protect people, families or societies against bad spirits or adversities. Although they can also be aimed for black magic.

Fetish mask Dan

Ivory Coast

Beginning XX century

Dan is one of the cultures that coexist in Ivory Coast together with others such as Akan, Senufo, Akye, Anye or Aowin cultures. These cultures keep their languages and traditions nowadays. Dan people are governed by a council of elders in which masks like this participate in the power of the «great» mask that dances in public ceremonies. Dan fetish masks are known as passport masks, because of the small size they can be carried hidden during the journeys.

Usually, this kind of figures or fetishes have two faces, one in the front part and other in the back part, they have a protective role and they acquire this strength through the substances extracted from nature that they carry inside. These figures to be protective represent neither malignant nor benign force, are oriented by the specialist to get the desired effect on the person who orders them.

Afrikanische Fetische.

(Máscara fetiche Dan)

Akan,Senufo,Baoulé,Akye,Anye

Jano Fetish(Fetiche Jano)

Juliette Brinkmann has lived and worked for ten years in Sao Vicente Mindelo (Cabo Verde). With her camera she points social spots, taking people as the central subject.

Since 2012, her photography is focused in portraying the scenery of homosexuals and transsexuals, although her first works date back to 90s Berlin’s Rave Era.Her exposition Muses of Cabo Verde is formed by a set of photographs, in black and white, of several participants in the first parade of Pride of Africa, held in Cabo Verde in 2013,  with the purpose of calling the attention on equal rights.

“I’ve focused on their individual beauty, which faces the context of life itself, marked by adverse social circumstances”. We have to bear in mind that Cabo Verde is a reference in Africa because of its stability, democracy, and growth.

However, it suffers from social issues such as lack of education, AIDS, forced prostitution, unemployment and drug abuse. Brinkmann shows in her pictures this other side of development and welfare.

AIETHOPIA. From 24 April to 3 June 2018

From April 24th to June 3rd, a new temporary exhibition will be open in our halls.

Curated by Juan José Santos, the exhibition AIETHOPIA consists of three paintings by Blanca Gracia, along with Myths of Cthuluceno, a photographic series on postcards by Adrien Missika. This group of works will be exhibited in the Rectors’ Hall and the Renaissance Hall. But in addition, in San Ambrosio’s Hall, you can enjoy several audiovisual creations by Andrés Pachón, Vasco Aráujo, Pilar Quinteros, Gerald Machona, Sanford Biggers, Terence Nance and Sun Ra.

AIETHOPIA is an imaginary designation, an invented region that dialogues with the permanent collection of the Arellano Alonso Museum of African Art at UVa. Bringing together the language and methodology of paleontology, anthropology, and ethnography, as well as the journeys of explorers and popular folklore, this exhibition aims to draw a magical, ritualistic and fictional parallel to the works on display in the Museum’s collection.

The aim is to bring contemporary works of art into dialogue with the traditional pieces of sub-Saharan Africa, reviving and providing new ways of approaching the heritage of African art in a creative, innovative and original way. Capturing new audiences and offering a re-reading to the knowledgeable visitor of the collection. Therefore, a different, enriching and refreshing reading are proposed, in addition to allowing a media attention of a punctual scope.

Visiting hours are the same as for the permanent collection: from Tuesday to Saturday, from 11 am to 2 pm and from 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm; Sundays from 11 am to 2 pm.

Admission free of charge.

Ancestral Roots of Amaya Bombín.

From March 9 to June 3, 2018

From March 9 to June 3, Amaya Bombín’s Ancestral Roots intervention can be visited in our three rooms located in the palace of Santa Cruz (Rectors’ Hall, Renaissance Hall and San Ambrosio’s Hall).

This project, which forms part of the Foundation’s special program around International Women’s Day, features several site-specific installations in which the artist uses simple materials very characteristic of the province of Valladolid and its landscapes: stones and vine shoots. They are joined by the red threads that unify the works and give them a special symbolism, since red is the color that symbolizes mother earth, the earthly, both in Africa (the axis of our collection) and worldwide. All these elements in his works try to deepen, take root, look for them, find them and uncover them.

As for the stones, since Antiquity, they have been a material that symbolizes permanence, union with the earth, identification with a place or consolidation of an identity. The red threads in turn, are a symbol of union, of connection between people and traditionally linked to the female tradition.

With the mixture of materials, the author tries to link tradition and modernity, deepening the relationship between today and the African tradition where the idea of continuity of life, linked to the reproductive power of women, is always present.

Contemporary art is therefore in our rooms and blends with the African tradition, generating an interesting dialogue in which new interpretations and meanings emerge for all the pieces, and give rise to a different way of seeing the permanent exhibitions of our collections.

As for the artist, Amaya Bombín, was born in Valladolid in 1977. She graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca, specializing in the Hertogenbosch Art School (Holland). She is also a Higher Technician in Advertising Graphics from the Art School of Salamanca and has worked in advertising as an art director in Madrid and Lisbon. She has participated in the Artist Residence organized by CreArt in Delft (Holland) and has obtained important scholarships, the most recent of which is part of the II Artistic Creation Scholarships of the Fundación Villalar-Castilla y León.

The collaboration of the Department of Education, Childhood and Equality of the Valladolid City Council has been fundamental in the organization of this exhibition.

Activity included in the program of the Biennial Women’s Views 2018 organized by MAV (Women in the Visual Arts)

[tab title=»Locuras/Corduras.

Follies/Sanities. San Ambrosio’s Gallery. 1st February, to 1st April 2018

The upper gallery of the San Ambrosio hall in the Santa Cruz palace hosts the first public exhibition of the photographic project FOLLIES/SANITIES of the INTRAS Foundation.

The project, launched in 2013, has become a tool to combat stigma against people suffering from mental illness. It consists of taking 4 photographs of each volunteer model, 3 in a previously determined pose (sitting, arms crossed and with a blue ball) and a fourth in a free pose playing with an orange watering can. All participants are dressed in black and the background is the same color. In this way, people will only be differentiated by what constitutes their uniqueness: their face, their gesture, their way of looking, their smile…, their individuality. In the case of the session held in the San Ambrosio room of the Santa Cruz Palace, coinciding with the celebration of the Night of the Museums (May 20, 2017), an African object was chosen, however, in relation to the collections that are usually exhibited in the Arellano Alonso African Art Collection of the UVa.

There are three photographers who, in a disinterested way, have collaborated throughout these years: Gaetano Pappalardo, who took the first photos, being taken again the work by Daniel González Rojo (labor trainer of Centro de Día de Toro of INTRAS Foundation) and Eva Iglesias Vázquez (head of the Department of Communication of INTRAS Foundation).

The exhibition of some of the photographs taken will be on display in the upper gallery of San Ambrosio’s gallery in the Santa Cruz Palace from Thursday 1 February to Sunday 1 April.

Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 2 pm and 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm; Sunday, 11 am to 2 pm

[tab title=»Grupo Bogolan Kasobane.

Bogolan Kasobane Group. The art of mud from Mali. 10 October to 10 December 2017. Rectors’ Hall and Ethnographic Gallery

The Bogolán Kasobane Group from Mali was born in 1978 at the N.A.I., the National Art Institute of Bamako, when young students: Kandioura Coulibaly, Souleymane Goro, Baba Fallo Keita, Nené Thiam, Kletigui Dembelé and Boubacar Doumbia, came together to rescue a local painting technique on the verge of disappearance, used since ancient times by women in the villages, in order to use it for the first time as a technique of plastic expression for the creation of contemporary works of art.

Proud of their culture, they learned from their teachers and lived in the villages for a long time. Thus they were initiated into the secrets of the technique of the «art of clay» and the symbolism of the language encrypted in the cloths, which are authentic pictographs or manuscripts made of cloth.

In homage to their mothers, guardians of beauty, tradition and social cohesion, they also decided to create works of art in groups, adopting a figurative language, in order to send out an artistic message to humanity under the motto «Peace and Culture».

His works have been exhibited in France, Japan and the United States.

Thanks to his intense artistic, research and teaching work, bogolan is an official subject at the N.A.I. and many young people have learned at the Atelier Ndomo de Segou. Today Mali is «the country of the Bogolan».

The exhibition is curated by the artist Irene López de Castro

The Arellano Alonso African Art Museum of the University of Valladolid possesses, among its African collection, an abundant and very interesting set of Quranic Slabs or Al-Luha. That Islamic teaching method was also developed in African countries, such as Nigeria, the case we see below.

That learning process takes place in the madrassas, Islamic religious schools, where religious, social, moral and cultural Islamic values are spread. These schools are frequented by people of all ages, both children to learn the doctrine and adults that aim to be imams.

Copying, reciting and memorizing the Quran and the surahs, in Arabic, will be the key in order to understand the usefulness of these slabs, since the sacred text, once it has been studied, will be passed to the next person, erasing the ink and writing with a reed pen the next chapter. This method is also used to teach children to read and write in Africa, being this one, in many cases, the only academic formation that they are given.

The upper part of the Al Luha is a wooden handle covered with leather, which makes it easier foe students to move the slab and to study and write on it; thus, the users can rest their arms on it. The oval-shaped lower part of the slab shows how the apprentice, sat with his legs crossed, places the slab between them.

It has to be noted that the origin of the madrassas dates back to the rooms of mosques where people discussed about religion and where the believer sought advice from the sheik. Throughout the ages, this place became separated from the mosque, until it turned into what we know nowadays.

The most ancient architecture is the Qarawiyyin Madrassa in Fez, established in 859, at the end of the Abbasid period with the vizier Nizam al-Maluk, who will also found the first higher education institution or Nizamiyya. He also created a system of public madrassas in several cities. Its confirmation and definitive form will come by the hand of Mamluks, reaching Sub-Saharan African countries like Nigeria.

——————————————————————————————

The group Valladolid DIBUJA gathers illustrators, painters, watercolorists, architects and drawing amateurs, who practice that marvelous form of expression common to all of them, and which, lately, is recovering the prominence it deserves.

From February 2010, Valladolid DIBUJA has been participating in the named Sketchcrawl, an international invitation that takes place four times per year, and simultaneously in cities of every part of the world. The participants draw “in situ”, indoors or outdoors, directly capturing in their sketchbooks what they observe, sharing the results on diverse social media afterwards.

The group members have been drawing in the streets, cafés, museums, stations and cemeteries of the town, among other places, as well as in events, such as the Teatro de Calle, the Holy Week, the Valladolid Motor Vintage or the Book Fair of Salamanca –on that occasion by the hand of the Pencil Agency.

That is the reason why we have opened this new exhibition “Valladolid DIBUJA en el museo” (“Valladolid DRAWS in the museum”), where there are works made in two sessions of the 54 Sketchcrawl, which took place in January 2017 in our San Ambrosio room (Kingdom of Oku of Cameroon).

In the works of small and medium size, we have the sketches the artists drew in the rooms with diverse tools, like graphite, ink, watercolor, colored pencils, etc.

In the papers of large format we see a proposal that was subsequently made to the group consisting on: creating a self-portrait in black and white of the half of their face with graphite, charcoal, etc., before passing it to their mate sat next to them, who completed the head with a mask extracted from which they observed in the rooms or totally imaginary and in color -basically crayons.

Throughout the exhibition you will enjoy the different viewpoints that each of the artists has created from our masks.

[tab title=»Tic-Tac.

Tic-Tac. Even a clock can tell the time. 4 May to 4 June 2017. Gallery of the San Ambrosio’s Hall

From 4 May to 4 June, a new temporary exhibition can be visited in the upper gallery of the Sala de San Ambrosio. In this case, it is a photographic installation, entitled «Tic Tac», which is made up of photographs taken by the young Lugo native Alii Dark (Alicia Castro Oroza).

The installation is part of a project, coordinated by Mª Carmen Amigorena, whose aim is that, through art and creation, young people between 17 and 18 years of age, find some future alternative to the strictly academic training that is frustrating and alien to them. Therefore, not only is this installation interesting in itself but above all for what lies behind it: a process of empowerment, research, debate, exchange and personal growth of young people.

On this occasion, Alicia Castro presents us with a proposal related to the vindication-denunciation of the difficulties that women face on a daily basis. In particular, the double working day that many women suffer: at work and at home.

«Women often find themselves in the situation of having to deal with husbands or partners unwilling to assume their share, considering that such work corresponds to women, which causes wear and tear, tension, stress and psychosomatic illnesses in many women. In the long run, this leads to a deterioration of the couple’s relationship, and in many cases to male violence when women begin to demand the need for their collaboration».

The exhibition consists of 8 color photos that allude to the 8 hours that make up the paid workday, showing various women working in different professions in the social field. These images are contrasted with 8 other black and white photos that reflect the previous women doing the housework, activities that they have traditionally carried out and so necessary for human life, but it is precisely this, their invisibility, that characterizes them. However, the magnitude and responsibility of this activity is what regulates daily life and allows the world to continue to function.

The photos are arranged in the shape of a clock face, reflecting the fact that for years the women have been in a maze with no way out, working every day of the year, without schedules. To use the symbolism of the number 12 (composite number) that represents unity, order, perfection, extrapolating it to men and women, we are one species, the human species, each one with our individuality but in equality of right and with the mission of perpetuating and perfecting our species in time. That time that is measured in minutes, hours and that form our past, present but also the future. For its part, the number 7 means transformation, and that transformation consists of educating the new generations in equality, that is the way out of the labyrinth. In addition to being an instrument to measure time, the clock has other functions such as activating a signal at a specific time, the sound of that alarm today is the cry of every woman victim of gender violence, represented in that closed frame with a stopped clock.

«We want that alarm in our clock to stop ringing, that we wake up together women and men, that we visualize the problem and assume that it is time to change and that education begins to play a more important role since it is the tool for change insofar as it shows us another model of coexistence based on equity and cooperation. What we do today will determine our future time.

Remember that admission is free and that the visiting hours coincide with those of the other rooms.

This activity is part of the «Museums+Social» project.

[tab title=»Permitido tocar, obligado sentir.

  • «Recipiente funerario Qua». Nigeria. Región de Calabar. Siglo X-XII.
  • «Arquero Han» de dicha dinastía china. 206 a.C.226 d.C.

Allowed to touch, forced to feel. African art by the Jiménez-Arellano Foundation and ceramics by Carlos Jimeno in the Monastery of Santa Mª de Palazuelos. From 28 April to 24 May 2017

Once again our reproductions travel around our province. This time they go to the spectacular Monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos (Cabezón de Pisuerga), one of the main Cistercian monuments of the 12th century.

But the pieces do not go alone, to our usual reproductions we have added two new works:

«Qua Funeral Vessel.» Nigeria. Region of Calabar. X-XII Century.

«Han Archer» from that Chinese dynasty. 206 B.C.226 A.D.

In this way, the family grows. Both works have been made by the Valladolid ceramist Carlos Jimeno Velasco, who owns his workshop in this town.

The aim of this exhibition is to bring together different cultures from different parts of the world that have one thing in common: the use of terracotta and ceramics throughout history. In this way, reproductions of autochthonous cultures such as the Vacceos, representations of the African continent and finally of the Asian continent, will appear. All this in a single container, the 12th century Cistercian monastery itself, a true Romanesque jewel.

Amelia Aguado Álvarez as director of the Foundation, Justino Díaz as director of the Monastery of Santa María de Palazuelos, Carlos Jimeno as the artist who created the reproductions and Cristina Bayo as curator will be present at the event. We are waiting to know if any more institutions like the manager of the Cigales Wine Route or the Valladolid Provincial Council are coming.

206 B.C.226 A.D.

Don Quixote on the Niger River. Gallery of Art, Sala de San Ambrosio. From 17 January to 12 February 2017

After months of enthusiastic effort, the originals of «Don Quixote on the River Niger» are already in Spain, an exhibition that brings together nearly 70 works by illustrators from the Sahel and which is being exhibited for the first time in our country. This is a cultural initiative of the Spanish embassies in Guinea, Mali and Niger, developed within the ACERCA Program for training for development in the cultural sector of the AECID and with the collaboration of the International and Latin American Foundation for Administration and Public Policy (ILAFAPP). The Spanish public can now approach the figure of the most universal nobleman through an African perspective.

The commemoration of the IV Centenary of the death of Miguel de Cervantes was a fundamental milestone in Spain’s cultural action abroad during 2016. The embassies of Guinea, Mali and Niger (three countries united by the Niger River) have participated in the events linked to this event with a unique initiative that, based on a multidisciplinary methodology adapted to the environment of West Africa and the Sahel, served to support the capacities of the local cultural sector while at the same time making the universal figure of Don Quixote de la Mancha known in those latitudes.

The Spanish trainers Ángel Domingo (Pencil Illustrators) and Aitor Sarabia (illustrator) have given workshops in the three capitals of these countries, allowing African artists to interpret the most famous nobleman in history in the light of local iconography. The creators have been trained in a different way of doing illustration, telling their own stories through the teachings of Don Quixote, Africanizing, from their apprenticeship, the work of Cervantes, the illustrious gentleman. But these artists (many professionals, others in training, some amateurs), have been able to perceive the commitment of Spanish cultural action abroad, thus expanding their curriculum and facilitating their professional projection.

The corollary of these workshops are the works reproduced in a catalog together with exhibitions of the illustrations in the three African capitals, country as a traveling exhibition in Spain whose first stop is the Museum of African Art Arellano Alonso of the University of Valladolid.

The exhibition, curated by Ángel Domingo (Pencil Illustrators), is located in the upper gallery of San Ambrosio’s hall (mezzanine floor of the Santa Cruz Palace). It may be visited from 17 January to 12 February 2017.

Adopt a robot. San Ambrosio Hall. From 12 January to 9 February 2017

The Villa Riberole collective is an academic project and was created with the aim of communicating civic values through art, awakening interest and curiosity for culture from childhood, transmitting respect for nature and working in solidarity with objects that were created under these premises.

That’s how Adopt a robot is born, children help children. This time it will be children between the ages of 4 and 7 who have worked with recycled materials; wood from broken pallets and driftwood, recovered from river banks.

Four themes have been proposed to them: Adopt a robot, figures made with wooden blocks from pallets; let’s play chess, the pieces have been made with driftwood; freedom guiding the people; an adaptation of Delacroix’s painting has been made with wooden figures and, finally, the marine world; fish, fantastic animals and corals made with pieces of dry trees.

In this exhibition, the result of this work is presented to the public. The little ones are the protagonists of the room, their figures elaborated as toys, with the courage and the boldness of childhood serve us to establish a dialogue with the pieces that are in the room and to play in the theater of life.

The story will be elaborated by each visitor to the exhibition and will be linked to the tradition of African oral transmission so present in the room.

Finally, we would like to make these children not only the protagonists of the museum but also the protagonists of a commendable work of solidarity; all the figures exhibited will be sold for 20 euros, a symbolic price for their real value. All the money raised will be donated to Children’s Villages. With this, we will have managed to get the children to help the children by adopting a robot.

Villa Riberole

Kuba Textiles. Views on Africa. Rectors’ Hall. July to December 2016

The Museum of African Art Arellano-Alonso of the University of Valladolid, has among its African collections, important textiles belonging to the Kuba culture. This culture, located on the banks of the river Kasai, enjoys great prestige due to its work in raffia applied to dance skirts, aprons, mats… made with looms, where they use a wide range of textile techniques including embroidery, decoration with appliques, cut-pile and is resistant-dying, techniques that have been used for centuries, thus forming part of their traditional crafts.

It is interesting to note that the Kuba men weave the material while the women embroider and add appliques.

The main uses of raffia fabrics, in addition to being used as clothing, were change coins, for their light, rich and portable character, which has been a very valuable asset for both Africans and Westerners.

The men weave the raffia on a single-row overhead loom at a 45-degree angle, so they must sit in the shade to place it on top and work with it. Due to the limited length of the raffia fibers, the maximum dimension is usually one square meter.

As can be seen, the geometric shapes are the predominant ones in the decoration. In fact, each of these shapes is usually sewn together to finish the piece.

Like the anthropomorphic figure we observe, we can specify that the skirts of the Bushoong women (the aristocracy of the Kuba) are embroidered in black-dyed raffia forming complex designs. These costumes were produced and used for ritual court ceremonies, one of the most sumptuous in Africa.

With regard to ritual fabrics, the patchwork technique is used, which includes squares or rectangles that are also made in other parts of the world. The hems are not sewn inwards but towards the surface of the fabric, giving it additional depth.

In the past, European nobility used to show fabrics in curio cabinets as one of the main examples of African art. But let’s go further, as these great designs have served as a source of inspiration for artists such as Klee, Picasso, and Braque. Matisse, a great admirer of these pieces, kept them even in his studio.

GEMELOS IBEJI YORUBA

The twins in Africa. January to June 2016 IBEJI YORUBA TWINS

The Yoruba are culturally and demographically the first ethnic group of Nigeria, who will share with the Ibo the historical protagonism of the region since at least the century.

The pair of sculptures called ere-beji or ibeji were sculpted to commemorate the birth or death of twin brothers, who had a supernatural origin.

In ancient times, the Yoruba even sacrificed newborn twins, something that does not happen nowadays because they are received with great joy, having parties in which the whole community participates.Children bring happiness, health, and prosperity to their families, their upbringing being more permissive than that of other children. But they can also cause disasters or illness, so they must be treated with respect.

They share the same soul in two separate bodies. The first twin that is born (regardless of whether it is a boy or a girl) is called Taiwo which means «He who comes to taste life». The second will be called Kehinde or «who comes after the other». Strangely enough, Taiwo is the youngest twin, sent by his brother to be the first to see the world and tell him what awaits him. The sign that all is well is set with her crying, so Kehinde is ready to go out.

For this reason, Taiwo is more curious and adventurous, while Kehinde is intelligent and thoughtful. On the third day after birth, the babies are taken to the priest or Babalawo who will perform an oracle for them. If necessary, it will remove the evil spirits that can destroy your life. The mother will then be instructed on how to treat the twins throughout her life.

If one of the infants dies, the other’s life will be in danger because of his balance, his soul has been broken. In this way, a piece of wood must be carved as a symbolic substitute for the child. If two die, two will be done, and they will go together.

In this way, the deceased is given immortality and the ibeji figure will have to be cared for by the parents or by the surviving twin, for this reason, it will have to be washed, fed, clothed…Specifically, these ibeji cufflinks are made of wood with a strong patina to finish off the perfect finish, as well as the use of pigments, glass paste beads, and cowrie shells. They are also dedicated to the god Orisha Ibeji (hence the name of the works), God of the twins.

TIV TWINS

Small wooden votive figures, typical of this African typology.

In this case, we can observe two figures, one female, and one male. The latter follows the «Janus» typology, i.e. the representation of two bodies in one. It is the sense of duality, which cannot live without each other.

Two souls who are united by matter. The universal and inseparable union.

The realization may have been elaborated by the owners themselves, by being the object of family worship or by a priest. In any case, both have been treated under ritual instructions to give them the breath of life.Protectors of the family, they receive offerings in exchange for their favors. They are kept in family altars and shrines. The most logical thing is that they represent some ancestor, a deity or some being in relation to the cosmogony of the ethnic group.

The important and striking ritual scarifications on the abdomen and legs, typical of the Tiv, are striking.

The sexual organs appear very developed in both figures to show us the power and importance of fertility and the passage of adult life.

The arms totally attached to the body, the distance of the representation and the hieraticism, make these figures, if we add to this the navel that comes out towards the outside, in a very prominent way, we will obtain two typically African figures.

Caressing with your eyes. Photographs by Sara Pérez López. San Ambrosio Gallery. From 18 May to 10 July 2016

Through the ten images that make up this collection, we propose a sensitive journey through the four elements: fire, air, earth, and water; all of them present in the daily life of the inhabitants of the African continent.

The fire that marks the prehistoric and contemporary stage of the Bushmen living in Namibian and Botswanan lands, used to scare off wildlife, danger to villages and vital source of food preparation.

Air that brings aromas of sage, danger, and life in its purest form.

Water that takes us through the Okavango, the Chobe, marking routes and paths to discover through the stations.

Earth, dust, always dust, covering the feet, the clothes, the skin.

The (un)peaceful coexistence between people and fauna marks a slow pace that takes us away from our shaky daily life and puts us on notice that it is real, perhaps much more than our unstable life.

Portrait glances that take us to a way of understanding the simple world, in which the human essence overflows through the pores of the skin, reflecting through eyes full of feeling and light, captured only minimally through our indiscreet objective.

Snippets of a journey to feel, share and live.Sara Pérez López holds a degree in Art History, a Museologist, and a Ph.D. in Art Applications for Social Integration. A student of Fine Arts and passionate about photography, she seeks to make visible, through this technique, small and large details of the world around her.A lover of Africa, its history, cultures, landscape, and countryside, she embarked on a journey through Zimbabwe, Zambia,Namibia and Botswana in 2012, from which this collection was born.

[tab title=»FEMBIEM. Un proyecto expositivo de Victoria Bautista. Sala San Ambrosio. Del 25 de septiembre al 11 de enero de 2016″]

Cartel-Victoria1-140x300

Victoria Bautista

FEMBIEM. An exhibition project by Victoria Bautista. San Ambrosio’s Hall. From 25 September to 11 January 2016

Victoria Bautista describes this unique exhibition project in her own handwriting:

A phenomenon can only be collective if it is common to all members of society, or at least to most of them, and therefore if it is general. Emile Durkheim

«Fembiem. Under the Kingdom of Oku» is a project on a relationship of cultural similarities according to behavioral patterns in different contexts. A parallel between two cultures that do not touch.

The idea of developing this exhibition work is based on anthropological research linked to sociology and combined with design. It combines the interpretation of symbols and rituals in an operational sense and a positional perspective.

In 2012, the exhibition «The Kingdom of Oku» was inaugurated in the San Ambrosio’s hall in the Museo de Arte Africano Arellano Alonso de la UVa. The collection includes a series of exhibits reflecting the social structure, traditions, and art of one of the most important kingdoms in western Cameroon.

In the Kingdom of Oku, there are several secret societies whose highest representative is the shaman, guru, leader, power figure. Within these groups is a secret society called Fembiem.

The clothing used as a distinctive feature of the secret society is composed of multiple personal objects of each initiate (hair, shells…), sewn to the suit symbol of authority. According to their beliefs, these elements provide strength and power to confront their enemies by empowering the power of the shaman or leader of the group and, therefore, of the society he represents. «unity is strength.»

Inspired by this peculiar costume, an exhibition piece emerges with the aim of showing an interpretation of these secret societies and the concept (message) they contain.

The design is made up of twenty-two personal objects (twenty-three, with my contribution) belonging to twenty-three women related to art and the cultural sector: cultural managers, curators, museologists, artists, gallery owners, etc.

All of them enrich the cultural sector every day with their motivation and professionalism.

They are the strength and power of culture. They are the «Fembiem» – without being secret – of the present and the future.

Masks of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rectors’ Hall. From 01 July 2015 to 12 January 2016

The new temporary exhibition in our «Views on Africa» section in the Rectors’ Lounge has this time been dedicated to two masks of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Specifically, there is a Warega mask from the Lega Bwami culture dating from the 20th century and the “Mbuya” mask from the Pende culture dating from the 19th to 20th centuries.

WAREGA MASK

Made of wood, with the beard or luzela being sisal or palm fiber (its most characteristic feature) and the rest of the kaolin paste. It is a sculpture that belongs to the Bwami society. Prominent eyes are not pierced by something that does happen with the mouth. The nose is very stylized. High-quality interior polishing.

Its function is ritual, being used in the ceremonies of initiation to the five levels of life by laymen.

From time to time the Lega gather in forests to teach the initiates about the life and moral development of the individual.

Despite the formal simplicity of the work, its meaning is complex, as the mask draws on the sources of ancient proverbs and dances to ancestor them. The polished and smooth surface evokes the refined and perfectionist character of the Bwami.

Warega is the name given by the first European colonialists to the Lega who lived in the east of former Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Similar pieces can be found in important museums in Berlin, Paris or Brussels.

MBUYA MASK

This mask made of wood, has as its most striking element a large hair scalp, which is complemented by a curved forehead, almond eyes, flattened nose, mouth in which you can see perfectly the teeth, heavy eyelids and eyebrows line continue the shape of the forehead, where scarifications appear based on points that give rise to a circle.

On the back, it has raffia so that the wearer can put it on his head.

For all these reasons, the final result is a gloomy and taciturn expression, which has nothing to do with reality, since its function is to entertain the public, comedy the deviations from the ideals of life, which is why it is so realistic and expressive.

Sometimes it can appear at the end of circumcision rites, where at the end of the party of the passage to adulthood, young circumcised men gather in the forest to unveil the mask and have the right to touch it together with other ritual objects.

Its function is ritualistic and its creation has only been possible by a sculptor who transmits his knowledge generation after generation.

The name «Mbuya» means «village mask», as this type of creations shows us the various human types of the clan, such as the chief or the fortune-teller.

These works tell us about the history of the Pende, who arrived some 500 years ago in the area between the Atlantic coast and the Kwanza River in what is now Angola.

By 1620, when the Lunda empire expanded, they were forced to abandon these lands and emigrate to their present territory, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, dividing into some sixty kingdoms, such as the Kwilu (to which this mask belongs) and the Kasai.

Already in 1885, they were submitted by the Tchokwe people, a fact that ended with the arrival of Belgian colonialism.

Mainly farmers focused on the cultivation of millet, corn, bananas, and peanuts, it will be women who will do the fieldwork and marketing of the products collected from local markets.

The men’s work will be based on cleaning the fields and occasional hunting and fishing.

Socially, they are based on the lineage system, with no recognized central political power, and even local chiefs do not exercise very large authority. It will be the oldest maternal uncle in a family who is configured as the head of the lineage, looking after the welfare of the nucleus and the attention of the spirits of their ancestors (mvumbi), who are appeased through rituals and offerings, so as not to generate misfortunes, since these spirits may be benefactors or not, depending on the way they died.

[tab title=»EL REINO DE LOS EDO.

The Edo Kingdom (Bini in plural) or the Old Kingdom of Benin will become one of the most important societies in West Africa. Influenced artistically by the Ife, they made a courtly art from the thirteenth century to the present day, being their golden age between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

In this exhibition, we can enjoy a mask dated between the 19th and 20th centuries made of wood and which preserves the remains of polychrome. On the other hand, the unequaled leopard pectoral mask in metal, dated in the 18th century and made in bronze, where we can observe the great technical perfection to which the Edo arrived.

The Edo, located in southern Nigeria, in the swampy area of the Niger Delta, border on the west with the Yoruba (of whom they will take their religion) and on the west with the Ibo or Jukun.

The original population of the Ancient Kingdom of Benin calls itself and its language Edo.

We know that in the origins they lived in native clans, with their own artistic production, based on wood and metal, and that they developed animism based on the cult of their ancestors, where it is possible that they made human sacrifices in honor of the Oba (the king).

The first contacts with the western population will occur with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1472, establishing important commercial relationships based on fabrics, pepper, ivory… and a large number of curious objects. But it was with the arrival of the French, Dutch and English that his art was discovered in the rest of the world.

After the looting of the city of Benin in 1897 and the confiscation of more than 3,000 objects from the royal palace of the Oba, art began to have a unique importance.

O COTIDIAN NA ARTE CONTEMPORANEA.

Lugo, from 19 March to 30 May 2014

Since 2009, the Arellano Alonso Foundation of the University of Valladolid has been especially dedicated to the conservation, exhibition and dissemination of African art. However, in our collections we have other very diverse collections that are not usually exhibited due to lack of space. Thanks to the collaboration with institutions or centers in other cities, these works can be made known. And coincidentally they have coincided in time the exhibition of these in two cities of Galicia: Lugo and Santiago de Compostela.

From the 19th of March to the 30th of May, the Provincial Museum of Lugo is hosting the exhibition «The everyday in contemporary art». Curated by Mª Teresa Alario, the exhibition includes part of the Foundation’s contemporary art collection, made up of paintings and sculptures by some of the great names of the Spanish avant-garde of the 20th century, such as: Picasso, Miró, Daniel Vázquez Díaz, Eduardo Chillida, Saura, Manolo Millares, Rafael Canogar, Pablo Palazuelo, Adolfo Schlosser, Esteban Vicente and Moisés Villélia. There is also a group of artists that stand out in the transition from the 20th to the 21st century, many of them women, such as Carmen Calvo, Teresa Lanceta, Mar Solís, Esther Pizarro, Blanca Muñoz and Marina Núñez, along with Dis Berlin, David Israel, and Isidro Blasco.

The possibilities of reading this collection are many, but the presence of the everyday in contemporary art has been chosen as the narrative axis. Objects that usually surround us: from the tangible ones (such as objects or materials) to the intangible ones (sensations or feelings) that are so familiar to us.
